👨‍⚕️Health Care Buffet(t): August 17, Issue 38

Hey Legends! 🐮📈

Buffett’s 13F filing is out, and cracking it open feels a bit like peeking at the Oracle’s shopping cart. New picks this quarter: Nucor, UnitedHealth, Lennar, and D.R. Horton.

UnitedHealth is the real head-turner. It’s the face of America’s ballooning health care costs (the same system Buffett once called a “tapeworm”). Now that Berkshire’s in, the stock’s suddenly everyone’s crush, jumping 19% overnight.

📈 The Market Goes Bullish: The newest addition to the crypto IPO line-up is Bullish, the parent company of crypto-media firm, CoinDesk and a crypto exchange in its own right. Shares IPO’d at $37 and opened at $90. Peaking at $118 the IPO minted a valuation of $17 billion and several new crypto billionaires.

📈 BLS: 1 Trump: 1: This week, along with a new leader of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (William Wiatrowski) came new US CPI data. CPI was up 2.7% yoy and core CPI was up 3.1%, the effect of tariifs seemed small and results were obviously good as William wasn’t fired.

📈 To The Moon: At the time of writing Ether is sitting at $4,450.17 USD. Combined with increased institutional demand (think BlackRock and Fidelity buying at levels not seen since 2016) and fewer selling their stakes, we expect to see a new all-time-high soon.

📈 Are We in a Bubble?: This week marked the first quarterly earnings report released by Circle $CRCL ( ▼ 2.49% ) as a publicly traded company, despite revenues increasing by 53% it failed to break even. Even so, the share price jumped by 17%.

🌎 Chips are En-Route to China: After much flip-flopping, Trump allowed Nvidia and AMD to export AI chips to China, provided they give the White House 15% of revenues of any China-destined chips.

🌎 Palestinian Statehood: On Monday, Aussie PM Albanese rolled out the red carpet and invited the press to a conference with foreign minister Wong where they announced Labor would recogonize a Palestinian state at the next UN General Assembly.

🌎 A Swiss Sigh Of Relief: After news leaked from the White House that a tariff would be imposed on gold bullion, gold future hit an all new high of $3,534. Prices eased *slightly* since Trump dismissed the news as misinformation.

🌎 Trade War Update: The US-China tariff truce/deadline was extended by a further 90-days until November 10. Will this continue for the next 4 years? Only time will tell.

👔 Perplexity Targets Chrome: Perplexity AI, a three-year-old startup, stunned markets with a $34.5 billion bid for Google's Chrome browser, far exceeding its valuation of $18 billion, as it seeks billions of users for its AI browser Comet amid antitrust scrutiny.

👔 Wait, I actually like you: After previously calling for Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan's resignation, Trump is now reportedly considering a U.S. government investment in Intel to boost domestic chip manufacturing, leading to a 7% rise in Intel's stock.

👔 Bye EG Australia: Ampol, Australia's leading fuel retailer, will acquire EG Group’s 500+ Australian service stations for nearly $1.1 billion. UK-based EG, burdened by heavy debt, is offloading assets while Ampol doubles down on fuel retail.

👔 Earnings Soar, Shares Slip: CoreWeave, an Nvidia-backed AI chip rental company, beat revenue expectations with $1.21 billion in Q2. However, shares fell 12% as insiders can soon sell stock, and investors worry about cash flow and a planned acquisition.

🤪 Just Focus on Being a DJ”: When Goldman Sachs released a report saying that US consumers will bear the brunt of US tariffs, Trump did not hold back, directing the above quote and “get a new chief Economist” to Dave Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs.

🤪Assembly Line Tree: Ford, the first automaker to pioneer the moving assembly line, is now testing an “assembly tree” process that builds vehicles in three parallel parts before merging. The goal is to up efficiency, slash costs, and roll out a new EV truck priced at a very reasonable $30,000 USD.

🤪 Professionally Unemployed: Certain young professionals in China are paying fees to work in office spaces, giving the appearance of employment. Often materialising as coworking spaces, you could be paying 30-50 CN¥ per day ($6-11 AU) to have this honour.

🤪 Move Aside Olympics, China has Something Better: On August 15, China kicked off the 3-day World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. With over 280 teams and 16 countries represented it was a hub for researchers and sports fans alike. With bots racing, playing football and UFC-esque fighting.

That’s it for this week.
